A Brief Overview of Flora & Fauna in Gir


Flora of Gir:

Teak trees dominate the Gir region. Nearly half of the forest is teak forest. The most commonly found species in this region include are-acacia, Banyan, Jamun, Amla, Salia, Bamboo, etc. The trees of this forest have relatively broad leaves. They are particularly helpful in increasing the moisture content of the region. The forest department has planted Casuarina & Prosopis on the coastal border. Following this technique, the forest officials are enhancing the chances of deforestation in the area. According to a survey performed in the 1955, there were approximately 400 species of plants. Over the years, the number has been increased dramatically. 
 
Fauna of Gir:

There are approximately 300 lion species in this region. Panthera Leo of Gir is just a bit smaller than its cousins found in Africa. The present count of this species in Gir is about 411. According to the last survey, the total count of fauna species in Gir forest was approximately 2,375. This includes 38 mammals, 37 species of reptiles and rest are insects. Some of the most important carnivores found in this region include Cobras, Jackal, Desert Cat, Lions, Leopards, Bears, and Mongoose. The major herbivores include Bluebull, Chital and Sambar.
